Electrifying: Disney and Barneys Team Up for an Electric Holiday

If 2011 was Miss Piggy’s entrée into the world of fashion, then 2012 is surely Minnie Mouse’s. Not content with an appearance at September’s London Fashion Week, from 14th November Minnie and her crew will be taking over Barneys New York for the duration of the holiday season. Oh, and she’ll be wearing bespoke Lanvin while she’s at it, dahling (see picture below).

The New York-based luxury retailer and the House of Mouse have teamed up to create a “multi-platform initiative fused with fashion and fantasy” entitled Electric Holiday, inspired by the long-established Electric Light Parade that takes place nightly at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Florida. As well as taking over the store’s Madison Avenue windows and creating a 3D electric light show at its entrance, Disney have created an animated short featuring models inspired by Minnie, Mickey et al on a Paris catwalk in garments designed especially for the occasion by designers including Dolce & Gabanna, Nina Ricci and Balmain. Minnie will apparently be joined by Goofy, Daisy Duck, Snow White, Princess Tiana and Cruella de Vil.

More importantly, there will be merchandise! Available at selected Barneys New York locations and Barneys.com, items confirmed so far include Vinylmation figures designed by Paul Smith and Diane von Furtsenberg, Mickey Mouse ears by Rag & Bone and smaller items including ornaments, sweets and toys whilst related artwork will feature on Barneys shopping bags. 25% of sales from Electric Holiday products will go to charity.

For Disney, the Barneys holiday campaign represents the latest in a line of fashion collaborations, which includes the Designer Villains range, a cosmetics line with Sephora and a partnership with Christian Louboutin. Barneys, meanwhile, created a hugely elaborate Lady Gaga grotto for last year’s holiday season, so one can only imagine the delights Electric Holiday will bring!

  1. I’m excited to see the Vinylmation and some of the merchandise, but I really don’t love these images. Modernizing the characters’ physical images doesn’t work for me.

    • The new representations of the characters have definitely had a mixed reception! I just really like the fact that Disney are moving into the fashion world and creating merchandise that adults who’ve grown up with the characters can continue to wear!
